The Flathead River, a tributary of the Yellowstone River, flows through the town of Lake Whitney.
A man and a woman are still missing after a dam on the Flathead Dam near Lake Whitneys home, according to the Flatheads Emergency Management Center.
“It was just a very sad situation,” said Lake Whitners police Chief Brian Stokes.
Stokes said the dam had not been fully breached, and authorities were waiting to get more information about the dam, which is one of two on the flathead.
“We’ve got a lot of water flowing over the hillside and it’s just very dangerous to do that at the moment,” Stokes said.
The dam was closed because of a spill from the spillway, and there was a high risk of more spillages and accidents, he said.
