In his second year as the Panthers’ starting quarterback, Cam Newton has earned a reputation for playing hard.
He won his second Super Bowl in his first year as a starter.
And after taking the starting job after three seasons of Cam’s absence, he’s set to take his talents to the next level with the Panthers.
But his arrest in May 2016 will likely determine how the Panthers proceed with their QB investigation.
Newton was arrested for allegedly assaulting his former girlfriend, a former coach, at his home.
She was a Panthers assistant coach who played for the team when Newton played there.
According to the Charlotte Observer, the woman accused Newton of assaulting her on a date.
“She said he started by slamming her against a wall and pulling her hair and choking her, and then she got in his face,” the woman told the newspaper.
Newton’s wife, Nicole, told the paper that she and her husband “couldn’t stand to be in the same room.”
“He wouldn’t stop talking,” Nicole said.
“We couldn’t stop laughing.
We were like, ‘How could you do this to your wife?'”
Newton was released from jail on his own recognizance the next day.
He remained in jail, but not before he allegedly punched his ex-girlfriend and threatened her with a gun, according to the Observer.
She then filed a report with police, and Newton’s case was dropped.
His attorney, Michael Dyer, declined to comment to the AP on Monday.
The Panthers suspended Newton for the season opener after the incident, and he played in the Panthers win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in their final regular-season game.
He was released the following week.
After spending much of his time as a backup, Newton played in two games for the Indianapolis Colts last season.
He threw for 631 yards, four touchdowns and one interception against the Browns in his final start.
Newton has been the focus of multiple investigations since he left Carolina in early 2017.
In the most recent, in May 2018, investigators reportedly found that he had made at least six contact with a woman who was dating his former fiancee.
It’s not clear if Newton has faced any criminal charges in that case.
Newton did not respond to an email seeking comment on Monday, and the Panthers did not immediately respond to requests for comment from the Associated Press.
